Ukiyo-e: Dancing Bodies of the Flowing World is an international exhibition and research project connecting Hanover, Germany, and Hiroshima, Japan. At its heart are artistic collaboration and transcultural exchange.

Inspired by the historical concept of ukiyo (= the “floating world”) the project explores contemporary notions of embodiment, identity, memory, and technological transformation. It asks how images of the body and cultural narratives evolve, shift, and are renegotiated in an increasingly interconnected world.

Six women artists from Europe, Japan, the United States, and Bangladesh come together in a collaborative process to develop site-specific installations, performances, and works across media and material practices. The exchange unfolds in both Hanover and Hiroshima, encompassing artistic production, public presentations, and formats that foster dialogue and shared reflection.

The project serves as a platform for artistic research, collective creation, and international dialogue, opening up new perspectives on the body, cultural identity, and the dynamics of a changing world.

Initiated by Kunstwolkenagentur

Like a cloud:
free,
ever-moving,
unexpected.

Kunstwolkenagentur is not a fixed place, but a fluid and evolving concept.

Wherever art finds fertile ground, it gathers momentum through collaborations with galleries, independent initiatives, and cultural networks. From this convergence, it releases a rain of artistic possibilities in the form of curated exhibitions, international projects, and encounters between artists and ideas.

Kunstwolkenagentur seeks to open up spaces for visibility and dialogue beyond established institutional structures, encouraging shifts in perspective and fostering connections across geographical and disciplinary boundaries.

Here, curating is understood as an artistic practice in its own right: a living process that builds relationships, sets ideas in motion, and opens up new spaces for thought and perception.

As it travels, Kunstwolkenagentur leaves traces that strengthen connections, initiate new processes, and create room for fresh thinking. Wherever it appears, it cultivates the conditions in which new possibilities can take root and the future can flourish.
